Where do I start


  • Ensure Umpires have their own whistle and centre pass indicator (ie. rubber band)
  • Wear suitable sport shoes and clothing that do not clash with the playing teams
  • Umpires to use whistles well so all players can hear it
  • Use a load clear voice
  • Develop the 4 C's - Consistency, Control, Confidence & Communication

Pre-Game Duties


  • Check fingernails are cut short & smooth, not jagged
  • Players have no jewellery - earings cannot be taped.  Only wedding rings & Medical Alert bracelet to be taped
  • Correct team playing uniform is worn
  • Captains have tossed and have informed the umpire of the result ie. goal & first centre pass
  • Ensure there are 2 scorers - preferably 1 from each team, to stand on the sideline, off the court, in line with the Centre Circle

Court control


  • Umpires always umpire to their right - do not split the court in half
  • When a goal is scored in the umpire's half, they restart for centre pass
  • Umpires always indicate the direction of the centre pass after each goal is scored
  • Umpires control the throw ins on the whole sideline of their side of the court and the Goal Line to their right


Scoring - before the game

  • Two Captains must toss BEFORE game starts
  • Captains shall inform the umpire who has first Centre Pass
  • Umpire to write (E) on the scorecard ie. "PASS" line

SCORING DURING PLAY & AT END OF EACH QUARTER

  • If team starts off with the first centre pass they will always be on (E) Evans during the playing quarter.
  • Team will take the next pass whenever the total score of the 2 teams playing are on Evens
  • The opposing team will have the centre pass whenever the total score is on (O) Odds
  • Umpires to note if the Ball is in play or after a goal has been scored or heading to the Centre Circle at the end of each quarter
  • Umpires are to indicate the on the scorecard the end of quarter time score
  • If the Ball is in play - passes change ie. E becomes O, O becomes E
  • If the goal has been scored or teams are heading towards Centre Circle passes stays the same ie. E becomes E, O becomes O.  Add your two scores together, who ever is on E or O has the next centre pass

Start of game

  • In order for a team to take the court, they must have at least 5 players
  • a late player may go on court but only after a goal has been scored; immediately following an interval; after a stoppage for injury/illness
  • the late player must take the vacant position

stoppages

  • Any on court player can call injury time for a player NB: tying shoe laces is not a stoppage
  • A stoppage for injury/illness may be up to 2 minutes.  Any subsequent injury/illness by the same team in the same quarter will be 30 seconds
  • Coaching is permitted
  • Only the primary care personnel can come ont the court at the stoppage
  • All players must stay on the court

Contact

  • Contact with the ball - player puts hand on the ball held by the opposition, knocks the ball from an opponent's hand or pushes the ball into an opponent
  • Pesonal contact - player pushes, trips, knocks, bumps or holds an opponent
  • Causing contact - player moving into the path of an opponent who is committed to a particular landing space or two defending players "sandwiching" an opponent, not allowing the player to move

Penalty for contact - Penalty pass/shot where the infringement occurred.  The infringer must stand beside away and take no part in play until the pass or shot has been taken.obstruction

 OBSTRUCTION

  • Ostruction is measured by the distance on the ground between two players
  • The defending Player must be no closer than 0.9 metre from the attacking player's grounded foot
  • If the player's landing foot is lifted, the distance is measured from the spot on the ground from which the foot is lifted
  • If the player lands with both feet simultaneously the distance is measured from the nearer foot of the attacker to the nearer foot of the defender

Penalty for Obstruction - Penalty pass/shot where the infringement occurred.  The infringer must stand beside away and take no part in play until the pass or shot has been taken. 

stepping

  • Stepping occurs when a player with the ball re-grounds the first grounded foot, hops on either foot or drags grounded foot
  • If a player lands on both feet simultaneously, either foot may be moved, then the other foot becomes the grounded foot

Penalty for stepping - Free pass where the infringement occurred.
